●　「with his eyes closed」の「closed」は、受身の分詞「being closed」の「being」が消えたものです。「his eyes」はその分詞の意味上の主語です。

●　「with ○ □」の□には、過去分詞・現在分詞・形容詞・前置詞句・副詞が来ます。

●　重要なのは過去分詞を使うべきかそれとも現在分詞を使うべきかです。まず、上に挙げた重要例文と同じものが出題されることがありますから、その場合は上記の重要例文を思い出して解きましょう。上記の重要例文を忘れたり、重要例文の暗記で対処できない場合は、「○ is □.」の文をつくって判断します。
　例）
　・with his eyes （closed/closing)
　　　　　　　　　　↓
（○）His eyes are closed. の状態にして
（×）His eyes are closing. の状態にして

よって、with his eyes closedが正解。

補足）
　・His eyes are closed. ＝彼の目は閉じている。
　・His eyes are closing. ＝彼の目は閉じつつある。

従って、「だんだんと目が閉じていく状態で」という意味を出したいなら「with his eyes closing」が正しいのです。しかし、ふつうは「完全に目を閉じて」の意味で使うのが自然なわけですから、「with his eyes closing」が入試で正解になることはありません。

次のように覚えておきましょう。

問題考察

●この問題の「with ○ □」は付帯状況なのですが、「～しながら」ではなく「and」の意味でとらなければなりません。特殊なケースです。「前節してからwith以下した」という流れです。

しかし、訳がどうであろうと「with ○ □」の□にどういうかたちが来るべきかという理論自体に変化はありません。では、さっそく上の方法を使って考えてみましょう。文法的に正しい英文を探します。

補足）
次の表現を知らないと解けないということです。
　・blame ◇ for △＝「◇を△のことで非難する」

Both sides were blaming the other for the failure.は、「両者双方とも相手方を失敗の原因であるとして非難していた。」と訳せる正しい英文ですね。

以上のことから、問題文もまた「with both sides blaming the other for the failure」でなければならないのです。
